Multicultural education: A closer look at Finnish education
Finland is known for its culturally homogenous nature;
however multiculturalism is not a new phenomenon in Finnish society. There has
been a long influence of Swedish and Russian culture. Under
rule of Swedes kingdom and Russian Empire for almost 700 years, Finland
experiences wide range of multiculturalism.
Even, after the independency, Finnish constitution adopts Finnish and
Swedish as national language providing equal opportunity to minority Swedish
speaking Finnish citizens. Earlier,
Russian and Swedish nationality constituted a minority community, however, presently
Finland experience
a rapidly growing immigrants from other nationality. Immigrant counts to approximately 4.8 % of the total population in Finland (Statistics Finland,
2016).
Among the immigration, lager group represented from Russia and Estonia and along
with other nationalities. Increasing immigrants in the Finnish society demands
a modern multicultural education to provide equal opportunity to function
effectively. However, multicultural education is not an unknown phenomenon. Since
1980s, policies concerning multiculturalism in education have been implemented in
Finland. These policies aim to provide opportunity to those who are moving to
Finland to function equally in Finnish society (Lahti, 2007). Among those
polices, compulsory education for children of foreign nationals, free
education, non-discrimination policy ensured everyone enjoy the privilege of
equality and have an opportunity to experience them. Multiculturalism in
education is indistinct term. In generally, we could explain multicultural
education helps to enhance empowerment in students to benefit from social and
economic opportunity available in a community without differentiating color
(race) and prejudice towards one’s culture. At the same time, we could defined
the core principle of multicultural education as to promote diversity in
learning process, enhance intercultural understanding between teachers and
students and to integrated to a new culture
Some Challenges faced during Multicultural education: Teachers experience
three major challenges when they are teaching in a multicultural environment (Graeffe and Lestinen (2011)): (1)Teachers
no longer teach for a homogeneous group were everyone share the same view (2) immigrant
student are not familiar with phenomenon and concepts as Finnish students do,
therefore immigrant students required more time and teaching to learn this new
knowledge and (3) for those multiculturalism become problem, if they considered
it as a problem.
